The first collection of memoirs from the author who inspired the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small.
James Alfred "Alf" Wight, OBE, FRCVS (3 October 1916 – 23 February 1995), known by the pen name James Herriot, was a British veterinary surgeon and writer, who used his many years of experiences as a veterinary surgeon to write a series of books each consisting of stories about animals and their owners. He is best known for these semi-autobiographical works, beginning with All Creatures Great and Small in 1972. The British television series adapted from the books is also titled All Creatures Great and Small. Nicholas Ralph is a Scottish actor who grew up in Nairn in the Highlands. He graduated from the prestigious Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formally RSAMD) in 2017. He became a household name in the UK thanks to his role as James Herriot in the 2020 Channel 5 relaunch of the iconic series All Creatures Great and Small, about a newly qualified Scottish vet who joins a veterinary practice in country Yorkshire. Nicholas has also appeared in dozens of stage plays with the Royal Conservatoire and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He can also be seen in the movies The Devil’s Light in the role of Father Raymond, and in the movie The Most Reluctant Convert as the young C.S. Lewis.
'The attraction of Herriot's ever popular memoirs of a country vet
... is their alternating highs and lows, humour and pathos, and
gripping anecdotes about delivering lambs, grumpy farmers,
hypochondriac pet-owners, stroppy cows and blunt Yorkshire
characters.'
*The Daily Mail*
'Bulls with sunstroke, pigs on the run and a cake-eating Peke with
a betting habit ... I grew up reading James Herriot's book and I'm
delighted that thirty years on they are still every bit as
charming, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny as they were
then.'
