The little Gaulish village where Asterix and Obelix live has just one drawback - its bard is the worst musician in the entire ancient world. When Cacofonix strikes up, his singing sends the sun behind clouds and makes rain begin to fall. But that's just what they want in the distant Eastern kingdom of Rajah Watzit, where the guru Hoodunnit, with his sidekick Owzat, is threatening to end a terrible drought by sacrificing the lovely Princess Orinjade. The fakir Watziznehm arrives by flying carpet to ask the Gauls for help and just for once, after many adventures, Cacofonix can feel that his talents are properly appreciated.

I'm a long time fan of Asterix and Obelix, first finding their magic 28 years ago. This is one of what I'd call the gems: ranks along with the best of Asterix and the Chieftans Shield, Asterix and the Normans, Asterix in Spain and Asterix the Legionary. Plus its about time Cacofonix became a hero!

Cacophinix is finally allowed not only to accompany our heros on their adventures; but he is actually encouraged to sing on them too! With the life of the lovely Princess Orinjade on the line, the only thing that could possibly make the situation any worse would be if a sudden bout of laryngitous were to come..... Featuring some old friends and some new ones- this Asterix adventure is a worthy addition to the tradition.

Asterix always goes down a treat, and this one is no different. Asterix and Obelisk end up escorting Cacaphonix (who, for a reason I must have missed, produces rain when he sings) to India. There are some wonderful new characters with colourful names, and the oldies make their return (the Pirates, as always, get struck again!)

This is a good one of the new ones, not that they are bad per se, just not as good as the oldies, but in any case this one is pretty much on par with the oldies. A grand adventure that needed to have been done, I mean how can Asterix and co not check out the magic carpet and associated adventures? Beautifully done!
