John P. Boyle (d. 2006) held Professor of Religion Chair at the University of Iowa, is the author of The Sterilization Controversy: A New Crisis for the Catholic Hospital? He also published dozens of essays and reviews in scholarly journals.
". . .Boyle's book represents a contribution to theology both
because he knows the history of the discipline (not always expected
today) and because he properly warns us against a completely
centralized Church which, however doubtfully existent today,
remains always a political and theological temptation." —The
Thomist
"Boyle's painstaking historical research, judicious analysis, and
perceptive theological insight make an invaluable contribution to
the hotly debated issue of the relationship between hierarchical
teaching authority and theological inquiry in contemporary
Catholicism." —Charles E. Curran, Southern Methodist University
