"This book is an episodic log of some of the more memorable of (the author's) nearly 10,000 hours aloft in peace and in war. It is also an attempt to define by example his belief in the phenomenon of luck-- that the pattern of anyone's fate is only partly contrived by the individual".--The New Yorker.

Reviews

"Fate Is the Hunter is partly autobiographical, partly a chronicle of some of the most memorable and courageous pilots the reader will ever encounter in print; and always this book is about the workings of fate. . . . The book is studded with characters equally as memorable as the dramas they act out."--Cornelius Ryan, author of A Bridge Too Far and The Longest Day

A great insite to the risks and challenges for those early commercial airline pilots. Definately for those with a pioneering spirit and a love of the air.

An essential for every aviators bookshelf. A thorougly enjoyable read and exceptionally well described record of the authors experience of pioneering days of aviation.

A great book, a must have on every pilot's bookshelf. Easy to read, great stories told in fine detail. Recommended to me by a very experienced flying instructor prior to commencing instrument rating due to the lessons contained withing the stories.

This book is a fascinating, autobiographical story of flying during the war and afterwards with a number of civilian airliners. It tells of some 10,000 hours aloft and takes the reader into the cockpit very graphically. The beginning is a bit slow with a writing style that is rather antiquated (if this is the right word) but perservere as once I was into it, I couldn't put it down - literally. Every 5 mins I had I was delving into another chapter. The story illustrates just how dangerous flying was in the years gone by, without modern technology, weather radar and technical aids like GPS, TCAS and automatic pilots and the reader can see how the authors survival was an equal amount of flying skill, lessons learned and lady luck. Thus the title 'Fate is the Hunter'.
