Marcia Muir Mitchell, an independent writer and creative director, traded a successful career in advertising for the life of an artist-sometimes a starving one-in the south of France. Her memoir, French Toast revisits her exploits, both romantic and enterprising, in the ancient Provencal village of Saignon. Marcia grew up in Atlanta and went to Brenau College for Women in Gainesville, Ga. She was reared to be a Southern Belle, but her parents' stories and pictures of their French travels caught her fancy and after three husbands and seven jobs, she closed her business in Washington, D.C., and opened a new chapter in her life. Fourteen years later, Marcia returned to the U.S. with her cat, Raoul, and settled in Los Angeles near her son Ben Feldman, an actor. She adopted a rescue dog, Zoe. Though Zoe and Raoul speak different languages, they have no trouble understanding each other.
