In the second novel set in the "darkly fascinating world" (SF Site) of Anne Bishop's Black Jewels Trilogy, ambitions unfurl as the realm's dreams of a liberator have finally been made flesh...

The Blood have waited centuries for the coming of Witch, the living embodiment of magic. But Jaenelle, the young girl singled out by prophecy, is haunted by the cruel battles fought over her-for not all the Blood await her as their Savior. Some dismiss her as a myth. Some refuse to believe. And still others look forward to using her, making her a pawn to their shadowy devices.

Only time and the devotion of her loyal guardians have healed Jaenelle's physical wounds. But her mind is fragile, barely able to protect her from the horrifying memories of her childhood. Nothing, however, can deflect her from her destiny-and the day of reckoning looms near. When her memories return. When her magic matures. When she is forced to accept her fate.

On that day, the dark Realms will know what it means to be ruled by Witch.

New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop is a winner of the William L. Crawford Memorial Fantasy Award, presented by the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts, for The Black Jewels Trilogy. She is also the author of the Ephemera series, the Tir Alainn trilogy, and the Novels of the Others-including Etched in Bone, Marked in Flesh, Vision in Silver, Murder of Crows, and Written in Red. Reviews

“[The Black Jewels] series...has long been celebrated for its dark sensuality and focus on female characters....[the books] remain crucial foundations of the romantasy genre and paved the way for what followed.”—Paste Magazine

Praise for Heir to the Shadows

“Bishop seems to delight in turning fantasy conventions on their heads...still darkly opulent, often exotic.”—Locus

“The fabulous talent of Anne Bishop is showcased in Heir to the Shadows....Ms. Bishop’s striking magical concepts and powerful images are wonderfully leavened with unexpected dash and humor, creating an irresistible treat for fantasy fans.”—RT Book Reviews

“Heir to the Shadows isn’t as dark as its predecessor...All the other elements that made the first book such a gripping read are present: vivid and sympathetic characters, a fascinating and fully-realized magical system...lavish and sensuous descriptions, and interesting world building that turns traditional gender roles and concepts of dominance and submission on their heads....It’s a terrific read, and I highly recommend both it and Daughter of the Blood.”—SF Site

“Daemon, Lucivar, and Saetan ooze more sex appeal than any three fictional characters created in a very long time.”—The Romance Reader

The second book in the Black Jewels Trilogy, and after the events of Daughter of the Blood, Daemon is left with a shattered chalice, and Jaenelle battles to recover from the horrors she has gone through. Because he’s in the Twisted Kingdom as a result, Daemon is largely absent from this book, which is a bit of a disappointment as he is one of the most charismatic characters in the series. However, Lucivar and Saetan in particular are given a lot more screen time, and the machinations of Dorothea and Hekatah continue. This one suffers a bit from ‘middle book syndrome’, as it largely consists of the aftermath of the first book and the set-up for the events in the next book, however the pacing and the writing are still to a high standard, and this relatively quiet period lets many of the characters blossom fully. Make no mistake though, this book still packs a punch, and successfully continues in the vein of its predecessor; as a very exciting, dark and fun book.

the second book of the series every thing looks perilous. Daemon is mad and Jaenelle is really sick and when she starts to heal she forgets all about him. this book is how she is piecing her life together. Luciver escapes but he thinks that Daemon killed Jaenelle so their relationship is to the point where they wish each other to suffer. a great read.

Where the first book was looking at Saeten's part in Jenaelle's story this is Luciver's turn. Thinking that his brother Daemon has destoryed their Queen he swears to kill his brother. Only thing is that Daemon Haylls Whore is no longer who he was, he is now totally insane. This book is filled with missed opportunities, sacrifices for a cause that is dark and beautiful. Anne Bishop is a brilliant writer and will storm the readers world and this is certainly a must read seriies.
