Richard Atwater was a newspaper columnist and also taught Greek at the University of Chicago. He got the idea in 1932, after watching a documentary about Richard E.Byrd's Antarctic expedition but had had only completed the first part when he had a stroke and the book was completed by his wife Florence. They were jointly honoured with the Newbery Medal in 1939.

About the Author

Before his death in 1948, Richard Atwater was a newspaper columnist and a professor of Greek. He is best known for writing Mr. Popper's Penguins with his wife, Florence, who finished the novel when he fell ill. Together, they were honored with the 1939 Newbery Honor Award.

Mr. Popper's Penguins is an utter delight. Though meant for younger children (say around the age of 8), I am about to purchase a copy for my step-daughter, who is 10. Her reading level is quite high but I know she'll love this story. This should be one of the great classics to share with that special child in your life.
