This is without doubt one of the best historical novels, or for that matter mystery novels, that I have read. The mystery compenent - the enquiry into the deaths monks in a 14th century Italian monastary - is exciting reading in its own right. However extra interest and substance is given to the novel by the information regarding the various aspects of the Christian church of the time - political, sociological, and theological. This does not, however, make the book difficult to read, or the story hard to follow, as this seemingly complex information is presented as part of the story, and presented for the main part in conversation, and therefore divided into comprehensible segments. Most of the main characters, in fact, represent in their views, different aspects of the varied beliefs held at the time - both those cosidered "orthodox" and those considered "heretical". This means that these beliefs and attitudes are part of the mystery, and at least one of them is part of the solution. Although it requires a little more concentration to read than many works of "popular fiction", is it by no means a hard slog, and is compelling from start to end.
