Real Rape, Real Pain is a book may make you feel

uncomfortable, in that it tackles the violence and unpleasantness

of rape within marriage; it forces us to confront the hidden

violence in our society. It challenges the silence and secrecy about

marital rape. As the authors say, "Violence is about using power

and control, not about being out of control. There is no excuse for

marital violence ever."

The aims of the book are changing the rape culture and helping

survivors. Chapters cover identifying rape in marriage, women at

risk, staying with a partner who has raped you, sexuality after

partner rape, a safety plan, and numerous other issues related to

partner rape.

As American author Monika Ostroff says, "Real Rape, Real Pain

is the compassionate, loving friend that reaches into the darkness

to the sufferer of partner rape, offering hope and help for a

healthy life, free from violence. A wise teacher, this book will

inform everyone from professionals working in the field to family

members of women being victimized to politicians who are

empowered to make the necessary changes to ensure safety on all

our behalves. This book is a beacon of light that illuminates a

dark, misunderstood yet incredibly common phenomenon of

violence. It is a must-read for every survivor, family member,

clinician, and politician!"

Real Rape, Real Pain busts the myth wide open . . . that in fact women that are involved with an abusive partner do indeed get raped, that just because it's happening inside marriages and relationships, it is still rape. This book reinterates that rape can happen anywhere, to anyone, at any time. Rape is not confined to stranger attack. The authors, and thirty survivors share some painful memories, their stories and their courage. The authors cover a lot of territory, beginning with society and how it has helped shape how men treat women; that as a society we actually perpetuate the myth that rape doesn't happen at home, when it fact it does more often that we care to acknowledge. This is a powerful read, and this resource should be available in every Rape Crisis Center around the world. It's informative, offering information for leaving an abusive relationship through to the steps you can take, through to covering your choice to stay in the relationship. The key focus throughout the book is what the survivor thinks about herself, what is emphasised is that the problem lies with the abuser not the abused; the victim is encouraged to stay positive, to pamper ones self, and to remember to never define yourself by what happened to you.
