This is a bittersweet epilogue to the ten-volume saga - the Dream King is dead, but a new Dream now takes his place among the Endless, Morpheus and not Morpheus. As the story unfolds, we are again surprised when we discover the various aspects of this Morpheus. At the conclusion, in a stroke of genius that draws into Shakespeare's Tempest, we finally see the parallel between Prospero's renunciation of magic and Morpheus's relinquishing his role among the Endless. He has become perhaps too human, through his interactions with people, and needs to be cleansed, and that which cannot be cleansed has to die. One gets the impression that Morpheus (or should we say Mr Gaiman) has planned this all along - and there is no other way the story of *this* particular Sandman could have ended.

Don't bother!! Just stop reading at the end of "The Kindly Ones" and ignore this last story arc... It's like Gaiman reached a peak with "The Kindly Ones" and then just couldn't be bothered. The art is fantastic the best art of the entire series which makes it even more of a shame. Oh and Batman makes an appearance -that should give you an idea of just how bad it is, Gaiman moved "Dream" away from that part of the DC universe a long, long time ago...
