Taylor is the name, John Taylor. My card says I'm a detective, but what I really am is an expert on finding lost things. It's part of the gift I was born with as a child of the Nightside.

I left there a long time ago, with my skin and sanity barely intact. Now I make my living in the sunlit streets of London. But business has been slow lately, so when Joanna Barrett showed up at my door, reeking of wealth, asking me to find her runaway teenage daughter, I didn't say no.

Then I found out exactly where the girl had gone.

The Nightside. That square mile of Hell in the middle of the city, where it's always three A.M. Where you can walk beside myths and drink with monsters. Where nothing is what it seems and everything is possible.

I swore I'd never return. But there's a kid in danger and a woman depending on me. So I have no choice-I'm going home.

Simon R. Green is the New York Times bestselling author of the Secret Histories Novels, the Novels of the Nightside, the Ghost Finders series, and the Deathstalker series. He lives in England.

Green certainly has an imagination. The Nightside is a place we all want to go, but if we had the chance, would run screaming from it. The writing is satirical and easy to read and the characters are unique and startling which makes it the perfect airplane or beach book. There are some gruesome moments and some laugh-out-loud moments. I'll definitely be visiting the Nightside again - it's a very entertaining place to be.

A decent short book, done in the PI type of style you would expect, if you add in a mythological city, ghosts, timewarps, monsters, and a very bad house. The main character is a Nightside resident living in the ordinary world to be left alone. A woman comes to him with a case and pulls him back in, which, for him, is very dangerous. Lucky thing is he has more than one superpower.

The novella that introduces us to the world of "Nightside". A city where it is always night and the moon shines fuller and closer than it's pale companion in the 'real' world. John Taylor is a private investigator with a gift; he finds things. It is his legacy from his unknown mother. Years ago he ran from the Nightside to try and live a normal life in London but when Joanna Barrett wants him to find her daughter he will be dragged back. The Nightside is a dark, alternate world where the forces of light and darkness come to fight, feed and entertain themselves. A place where it is not safe to cross the street because not all traffic is cars and some things on the road are hungry. Demons run casinos, alien abductees have a safe house and a 60's cafe haunts the city. If you have read Green's "Shadows Fall" or "Drinking Midnight Wine" you will be familiar with his mixture of myth, black humour and honest treatment of characters and their many failings. If not, you are in for a treat! An engaging book that is difficult to put down until the case is solved. Even in it's ending it will leave you wanting more so it's just as well that there are five books following on from this. Green's imagination is boundless and the Nightside series is the perfect foil for his talent. If your current bookshelf holds such authors as Terry Pratchett, Charlaine Harris, Raymond Feist or similar then I thoroughly recommend you add Green to your collection. You will not be disappointed.
