Sociologist and author David Pollock describes a TCK as 'a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents' culture. The TCK builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership of any. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the TCK's life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of a similar background.' Filled with real-life anecdotes, Third Culture Kids examines the TCK experience and its effect on maturing, developing a sense of identity and adjusting to one's 'passport country' upon return. For many third culture kids, this book will be their first opportunity to discover that they share a common heritage with countless others around the world. This expanded edition profiles their personal challenges, from feelings of rootlessness and unresolved grief to struggles with maturity and identity. Highlighting dramatic changes brought about by instant communication and new mobility patterns, the new edition shows how the TCK experience is becoming increasingly common and valuable. The authors also expand the coverage to include 'cross-cultural kids', children of bi-racial or bi-cultural parents, immigrants and international adoptees - all of this bringing hidden diversity to our world and challenging our old notions of identity and 'home'.

Reviews

As an adult TCK, I have long wrestled with how I fit into this world. This book is the 'bible' for anyone who wants to understand the blessings and the curses of growing up multiculturally. - Wm. Paul Young, author of the #1 New York Times Best Seller The ShackGrowing up as a TCK has been a gift and has significantly shaped my life and work. As I interact with world leaders one day and with those living in refugee camps the next, I continually draw upon my experience of living among different cultures. I am delighted to see the lessons learned from the traditional TCK experience live on in this new edition of 'Third Culture Kids'.I called the first edition of Third Culture Kids 'absolutely brilliant'. This revised edition continues to earn that acclaim. It's a powerhouse of a book through which readers growing up 'among worlds'--and their parents and the professionals responsible for their care and teaching--become able to take leadership of the challenges and opportunities presented by such a rick and complex childhood.Because Third Culture Kids have been exposed to other cultures in significant ways and have experienced multiple transitions while growing up, it's in their DNA to thrive within the pace and nature of globalization. This book is a must to understand the challenges TCKs face and the unique skills they can leverage as global leaders.

I put off buying this book for a while, as I thought I could glean most of what I wanted to know from the internet. I was STOKED when I read it though. As someone who has grown up overseas in several countries across the world, this book spoke to me like a calming angel on the shoulder. It makes sense, it's easy to read, it's written by a fluent communicative human being and it's even got a nice sized font. Definitely must be read by ANYONE who has grown up overseas or is in a relationship with someone who has. Also. ANYONE who is thinking of bringing their kids up overseas or in a mobile manner and cares about their long term well being. It will do wonders for your understanding of TCKs/global nomads. Beg, borrow or steal this one. Alternatively, order it online.
