I've no hesitation in recommending Total Recall to anyone setting
out on training a puppy for the first time, or even the tenth time.
It is a book that is likely both to change attitudes and lead to
more sympathetic training, which is no bad thing.
This book explains everything you need to know about the recall,
from how and when to effectively reward your dog, to keeping
yourself motivated to keep up the training, as well as a series of
progressive exercises. Checklists are included at the end of each
stage to help you assess whether you are ready to move on to the
next. There are troubleshooting sections covering problems such as
your dog returning to you but not coming close enough to be caught,
and how to detect early warning signings that all is not well with
your recall.
Rating 10/10
The book's strength lies in clear, engaging writing and, in
particular, in its structured exercises designed to build a recall
from scratch.
If you have a dog who doesn't really think you're that important
and refuses to come back when called, this is definitely a book for
you. The whole publication is focused specifically on recall, in
various situations, and has many useful tips on what you need to
help train your dog, as well as a section on how dogs learn and
what techniques you should avoid using ... It is filled with good
simple advice which will make training your dog a lot easier.
Definitely recommended...
