Stardust:
Love Is Magic

Based on the best selling graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess, Stardust takes audiences on an adventure that begins in a village in England and ends up in places that exist in an imaginary world. A young man named Tristan (Charlie Cox) tries to win the heart of Victoria (Sienna Miller), the beautiful but cold object of his desire, by promising to bring her a falling star. His journey takes him beyond the walls of his village to a mysterious and forbidden land. On his odyssey, Tristan finds the star, which has transformed into a striking girl named Yvaine (Claire Danes).

However, Tristan is not the only one seeking the star. A dying kings (Peter OToole) four sons not to mention the ghosts of their three dead brothers all need the star as they vie for the throne. Tristan must also overcome the evil witch, Lamia (Michelle Pfeiffer) who needs the star to make her young again.

As Tristan battles to survive these threats, encountering a pirate named Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro) and a shady trader named Ferdy the Fence (Ricky Gervais) along the way, his quest changes. He must now win the heart of the star for himself as he discovers the meaning of true love.

Spiderwick Chronicles:
Their World Is Closer Than You Think

When the three Grace children troubled Jared, his bookish twin Simon, and their sister Mallory - move to the ancient Spiderwick mansion, they are at first none too enchanted by the run down Victorian, until they discover a Brownie, an enchanted creature, living in the walls.

They soon find a book Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You that will open their eyes to the invisible, odd, and sometimes dangerous world of dragons and boggarts, phookas and fairies, sprites and goblins that is all around them. When they cross paths with Mulgarath, an ogre, they realise quickly that he will stop at nothing to get his hands on the Field Guide.

I must admit that were it not for the fact that I found free passes for this movie, I likely wouldn't have ever seen it. That being said, Stardust easily exceeded my expectations. Stardust is a typical fairy tale-like fantasy but with a few exceptionally funny scenes as the result of Robert DeNiro's performance. The story holds together pretty well throughout and is enhanced by pretty spectacular visuals. If I had to describe Stardust by using other movies as reference points, I'd probably put it somewhere around The Princess Bride or maybe more recently Ella Enchanted (though Stardust is a little more adult-oriented). I think this movie would actually be a good date movie. While it's not necessarily a perfect film, it does provide the audience pretty much everything they can expect from a fairy tale/adventure movie.
