Performer Notes
  • Produced by renowned London-based DJ Erol Alkan, FANTASY BLACK CHANNEL is the debut album by the club-minded British indie-rock act Late of the Pier. Eagerly embracing a chilly New Wave aesthetic, the band is led by vocalist Samuel Eastgate, who energetically channels Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry on the punchy dance numbers "The Bears Are Coming" and "Heartbeat."
Professional Reviews
Spin (p.90) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[The debut] offers a fabulous simulation of '80s new wave, with burping, sputtering synths and sleazy, Bowie-inspired crooning from frontman Sam Eastgate."

Alternative Press (p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Late Of The Pier are blatant sonic time-bandits, lifting the best parts of the past 30 years of rock history with the some vintage synthesizers in tow."

CMJ - "LOTP utilize staccato guitars and unwavering downbeat drum stomps to set the stage for the over-the-top bombast of spacey synths."

Billboard (p.33) - "[T]he angular yet danceable set combines a mixture of menace and fun volatile enough to hint that their live shows must be irresistible."

Blender (Magazine) (p.65) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[With] blue-sky ELO harmonies, Bloc Party/Franz Ferdinand four-on-the-floor punk and a dozen flavors of squishy synth scuzz."

Clash (magazine) (p.71) - Ranked #3 in Clash's "The 40 Best Albums of 2008" -- "FANTASY BLACK CHANNEL is the culmination of trial and error, direction and experimentation, and bold dance and rock ethics."
