Tenor-saxophonist Eddie Harris was scheduled to record a duet set with pianist Jodie Christian but for unknown reasons Christian never showed up. Harris made it a solo showcase by first recording on piano and then overdubbing his tenor. The spontaneous experiment worked quite well as Harris performed four originals, lesser-known songs by Gershwin and Donald Byrd and four standards. The music is thoughtful and melodic but has its fiery moments, serving as a reminder (to those who may have forgotten) that Eddie Harris can really play. ~ Scott Yanow
